Stories of Courage, Perseverance and Silver Linings There is a saying: the hardest steel goes into the hottest furnace. I believe that we can always overcome adversities. These struggles can come in many forms. I decided that I need to start reaching out to people who have overcome these adversities, and learn from them how they used these difficulties as a stepping stone… how these setbacks changed their lives for the better. I record my conversations with them, so that YOU can also learn from these amazing individuals. Take notes, and take massive action to make our lives better!

This week guest is Sharen Choo. I met Sharen from one of Eugene Seah’s branding workshop.  Sharen is a supply chain analyst. She also has a lot of hobbies from music, dancing, etc. She teaches belly dancing in community centres. When she was 30-year-old, her marriage fell apart. We are connected through The School of Greatness Academy (http://schoolofgreatness.com/) by Lewis Howes also known as SOGA back in July earlier this year. Delane has an upbeat personality and also is a friend with a big heart who has helped me and wants to help others grow. She has connected me with several amazing people within the SOGA Community for the Rebound Stronger Podcast such as, Tina Ranoso Bangel, Carole Pilling, Jenifer Vroom, and many others. 

Delane Cooper is a custom jewellery designer and goldsmith who expresses her creativity by making beautiful pieces that tell meaningful stories for the wearer. She works with all precious metal, pearls, precious coloured stones and diamonds.

Her jewellery has been featured in Elle Magazine and in Royal Ontario Museum. Every piece of her jewellery tells a story. I was so moved by one of her designs which pays tribute to a client’s parents love of 63 years. The husband was the strength for his wife during a decade of memory loss. Amazing story and beautiful ring.

As a young adult, Delane achieved early success in marketing and sales in technology. But in 2003 she found her true calling in jewellery design.  Delane now marries her love of people’s stories with precious jewels and metals.

She has an amazing story of courage, through her journey of overcoming childhood abuse, having low esteem, dealing with medical issues, finding unconditional love and discovering her true strength and potential because of love while writing new, exciting chapters in her life.

Emmanuel Wolfe, Manny what his friend called him. shared with me about his personal experience going through some of the toughest low points in life, but he got through and come back even stronger. From raise in cult, lived in one of the most violent city is USA, homeless, addicted to drug, drinker, etc. Now he has transformed not just his life but also others as a speaker, coach and recently as an author. Manny helps others using Motivational Psychology, Neuroscience, and good old fashioned hard work to overcome the barriers between ourselves and our optimal self.   He is a living example that you can change your life, wherever you are in life now and it is never too late.

 I connected to today’s guest on School of Greatness Academy (SOGA). SOGA It’s a online course by Lewis Howes the host of School of Greatness Podcast. I love his energy which shown on his with the post on Facebook, his video on snapchat and Periscope.

Calvin Wayman is a social media entrepreneur. 6 years ago, being awkward and shy, he held a company record for the WORST performance a sales agent ever had. After almost being fired, he found a mentor and went from having horrible performance to being among the best.

One year ago, he left his day job to pursue his dream of working for himself. This guy is always challenging himself by pushing the boundaries of his own fear. He attributes his tenacity of “never giving up” to lessons he learned going out and knocking on random houses selling door-to-door.

    I connected to today’s guest at one of the trainings I attended. Felicia Tan is an amazing woman and mother. She is also an author, with three books under her belt, a speaker, a blogger and a business owner too.  As an author, she has written and published three books:

    • To Baby with Love: A Mother’s Journey Through Hope, Loss and Renewal
    • Lost and Found: A Mother’s Memoir On Finding Faith Through Loss
    • And the last book, which just been launched on 7 May 2016: A Gift from Heaven A Mother’s Search for Her Rainbow Baby After the Storms.

    In her first two books she wrote about her two miscarriages which happened in 2011 and 2012.  The third book, she actively writes about her son on her blog at feliciatan22.com.  She owns a design company Design Workz, and recently founded Art of Life which advocated living life to its fullest. I really admire her faith in God, in His promises even though things seemed to be against the odds.

Cayden Chang came out from disadvantaged childhood, overcame lots of adversities and ultimately founded three companies Mind Kinesis Management Int’l LLP, Mind Kinesis Investments Pte Ltd, Value Investing Academy Pte Ltd which focus on NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Training and Value Investing Training throughout different parts of Asia.

Cayden fought renal cancer twice in a 2nd stage in 2010 and 4th stage in 2014.  In 2015, he wrote his 2nd book The Book of Hope: One Man’s Journey Facing Cancer As A Young Husband, Father And Entrepreneur” to raise funds for cancer research for National Cancer Centre. This book tells of his experiences with the disease, including watching his late mother battle terminal-stage lung cancer in 1997. He also wrote “Do You Have What It Takes to Be BOSS” in 2010 and donated all the sales proceeds to ‘The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund’.

Cayden graduated with 3 degrees; a Bachelor of Science degree (Merit) degree, Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and a Master of Science degree in E-Business from National University of Singapore. He has received the Lifelong Learners Award 2008 from the Minister of Manpower on 18th Nov 2008, Mr Gan Kim Yong.

In this episode I talked to Nate Ridgeway from Atlanta, Georgia, United States. I got to know him. It was through a podcaster group, Podcaster Paradise. He is a coach with The John Maxwell Team.  He is a successful entrepreneur who making impacts to many lives. The special guest for this episode is Hitesh Ramchandani.  He is an extraordinary young man with many achievements.  I first knew Hitesh around end of last year when I found his book in book store while browsing and looking for inspiring book.  I read his book and attended his talk and finally got the opportunity to interview him. Although he has cerebral palsy, a condition that affects muscles, movement and motor skills,

this does not hinder him in achieving great things, things perhaps some of us still want to achieve. Julian and I are both listeners of Geoff Woods’ The Mentee Podcast and became friends through Geoff. He is currently Vice President in Consolidated Asset Management Services, LLC . He specializes in optimizing energy assets, structured transactions ,and Merger & Acquisitions. He has electrical engineering degree with 20-year experience in the generation, transmission and distribution of energy He also plays bass guitar in a rock band is his spare time. After a series of personal hardships, which included the near death of his children, loss of jobs, a divorce, financial loss, etc. He realized that science and spirituality say the same thing about energy and in particular the need to lower resistance.     • The downward journey:
      • We often thought we have the formula for success. We chase success with all our might and strength. When we later discover that it does not work, we crash and fall into the lowest point of our life. We try to escape by different ways.
      • We act similar to the young son in the parable who asked his father for his estate. We ask God to give us all the good blessings (good exam results, good career, good spouse, children etc.).
      • Our world view of success is to earn lots of money, the fastest way we know how. We sometimes use God to serve us for our self-glory and achievement.
    • The lowest point of our life:
      • Our lowest point is the most fertile part of our life.
      • We need God’s help. Pray to get God’s help.
      • The moment of awakening: God reveal the truth and identify the mistake we have done. God will reveal the lessons from this low point, provided we humble ourselves enough to accept them.
    • The upturn:
      • We are to follow God’s Holy Spirit and receive His abundance blessing.
    • Surrender and accepting God’s will, whatever it may be.
    • Moving on from losing someone you really love.
      • Think about what God or the person you love (who has passed away) would think if God and the person you love look down from heaven and sees that you are suffering, in pain, wasting your life.
      • Road to recovery will not be easy, it is God’s way to help us become stronger to face challenge ahead. However, God will send you angles and people to guide you.
    • 4 dimensions of holistic healing:
      • Spiritual healing: Developing intimacy with God and hear from Him directly for guidance.
      • Emotional healing: Working through grief and guilt.
      • Mental healing: Surrendering all area of our lives to God.

 She is has a big sense of humor and very ambitious too. She broke the Guinness World Record for female longest abdominal plank in 2014. While doing this, she also raised more than 50,000 USD, ten times more than her initial stretch target. She has been featured in many media such as her favorite talk show Ellen Degeneres, ABC News Good Morning America, and many others. She even spoke in front of over 15,000 audience in We Day Seattle in 2015. I first come to know about her when I watched he TED Talk titled “What’s wrong with me? Absolutely Nothing!” In that 12:27 seconds, she inserted many jokes which made me laughed, but most of all, the message she delivered such as to see positive in everything, see things differently is really something I can adopt.

Mr. Edwin Chan has overcome lots of difficulties. He came out from poverty and turned himself into a successful businessman owning multiple businesses. As a child, he lived in church compound, relying clothing, school uniform and books from donations. He became an orphan when he was 15 year old. It was fortunate, he was adopted by an unrelated uncle. Unfortunately, the man passed away when Edwin just completed his A-level. He built his career as a sales man, selling different kind of products, from typewriter, telephone system, encyclopedia, and many others. His philosophy “Tough times will never last but tough people do”. He is the founder of Cambridge Institute which offers language learning programs. He is a man with big heart, he has helped many foreign students in Singapore to enable them finish their education here. I attended his talk titled “Thriving through adversity” about last month.

I got to know about Rodrigo Caetano through one of Michael Hyatt’s newsletter which highlighted Rodrigo’s life transformation in 2015. I was so impressed with his achievements in 2015, immediately I reached out to him and he replied. He is a very accomplished man. He holds MBA degree from University of British Columbia. He is the Founder and past president of HSBC Speech Architects Toastmaster. He is currently principal consultant for WhiteLeaf Management consulting. Where he works on clients from various industry such as technology, mining and banking industries. Helping them in developing their strategic business plan. He speaks five different languages. The other side of him. He is a photographer, an author and a speaker. His biggest passion now is to use photography a means to help people find their creativity and also to reduce stress. Photography as a therapy that’s what he mentioned to me. He recently publish his photography book, Satellites, a collection of three year photography project, to showcase the different aspects of the day to day life of Brasilia suburbs captured in B&W Film. Josephus has transformed his life from troubled his teenager who involved secret societies, growing up as an alcoholic to a prominent lawyer. Some people called him rocker lawyer due to his long hair. He spends 1/3 of his time doing pro bono work, clocking over 5000 hours of pro bono work over six year.   The pro bono cases he takes are often to help troubled youth. In 2013 he is appointed by the law society of Singapore as pro bono ambassador.

He has received many awards one of them is Singapore youth award in July 2015, given out by National Youth Council, the highest accolade for young Singaporean who have made significant contribution to society.
